Jascha Horenstein
(1898-1973)

"One of the saddest things about leaving this world is not to hear Das Lied von der Erde any more."

The conductor Jascha Horenstein has yet to receive his due as one of this century's greatest. While his particular empathy with the music of Bruckner and Mahler is well-established - at least among serious collectors - his typecasting as a specialist in their music (something he was always keen to avoid) has tended to focus attention away from his other sympathies, which were numerous.

This page is still under construction, but as an initial offering here is my discography of Horenstein. I haven't yet finalised the format (comments would be welcome) and there will certainly be at least a table of contents added.

There are two versions, the long version, which contains a listing of all known issues (LP, CD, 78, tape) of all the known recordings conducted by Horenstein. The short version omits details of individual issues. Actually it should be called shorter, as it is still a fairly large file.

The sheer lengths of these files causes problems for some browsers. So, if you are having trouble downloading, why not use ftp? You can download the complete version in either ASCII or Postscript format. The short version is also available in either ASCII or Postscript format. Alternatively, you can get a compressed tar file , containing the complete discography in both ASCII and Postscript formats.

Both versions are cross referenced, by catalogue number to the chronological discography, which will appear "real soon now". I have taken the perhaps egotistical liberty of assigning a prefix letter of "B" to these numbers (in imitation of, inter alia, Otto Deutsch). There are some numbers with decimal places; these have been assigned to those recordings whose existence only came to light after the initial publication of The Horenstein Legacy in 1995. I have adopted a Dewey-style notation so as not to disturb the original numbers.
