Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen

This song-cycle - the title, roughly translated, means Songs of a Wayfarer - is earliest work by Mahler to have achieved a place the regular repertoire. It is the product of Mahler's unhappy love affair at Kassel with the soprano Johanna Richter. The texts, save for the opening song, are by the composer.

The original version was composed for voice and piano, probably in 1884-5, but Mahler orchestrated it in 1891-3 and 1896. The first performance was given in Berlin on March 16, 1896.

And, as is obvious, I am still working on this section, as I am on the other song-cycles. Please (continue to) be patient.
